Thoughts on VortexxyGaming after 10 Years

Back when I was making my first VortexxyGaming tribute, I initially planed to show all her video thumbnails while playing thematically appropriate clips of her voice. Only having iMovie at the time, I was unable to achieve the vision I had in mind and ended up scrapping the idea in favour of a poem paired with fan art. For the 10 year anniversary of her disappearance and passing, I decided to repurpose this idea using my improved editing skills and software. I hope you all enjoy the results! 💚
This time 10 years ago, I learned about Breath of the Wild through her timeline placement video. I shared in her excitement for this game, especially since I was in the middle of my final year of school and needed something to look forward to on the other side of my HSC. In fact, I’m pretty sure I was at an athletics carnival on this day 10 years ago - cold, bored and procrastinating on finishing an assessment due that afternoon (don’t be like me!). I never would’ve thought such a hectic but ultimately mundane day would end up marking the last time Vortexxy was ever heard from.
A decade later, we’ve had the 40 year anniversary of the series, three mainline games, multiple remakes and ports (including the newly-announced OoT) and an upcoming movie… all of which Vortexxy will never get to experience. It never fails to depress me that Vortexxy had the potential to be one of the most distinguished Zelda YouTubers out there. Her soothing voice and her relaxed style of writing and commentating made her videos so comforting and insightful without feeling like she was trying too hard to convince me of anything. Not to mention, in such a male-dominated genre her presence was a much-needed breath of fresh air which helped remind people that Zelda is for everyone regardless of sex or gender.
She may have only made videos for two years, but her legacy far transcends the brevity of her presence. She was one of the biggest inspirations behind my YouTube channel, especially for my scripted video essays and my thumbnail style. Every 20th of June, I rewatch all her videos and collabs to commemorate her and keep her memory alive. 10 years is a long time, but she remains loved and fondly remembered by myself and countless others who rewatch her videos and continue leaving comments to this day. She lives on in her work, the YouTubers and theorists she inspired and in our collective memories.
